    • About MeIllustration work I’ve been an artist since the late 90′s, and a published illustrator since 1999, when a couple of magazines featured my work at the same time. Since then, I’ve completed many works for various publishers, from small micro-press publishers up through larger publishers like Subterranean and Cemetery Dance. I’m lucky enough to have had a piece chosen for the prestigious Spectrum annual, a yearly competition and book for the best in contemporary genre artwork. The artwork was originally for Wicked Hollow #1, a small press magazine, and is titled “Fetal Position”. It appeared in Spectrum 9, and somehow was the only grayscale piece for 20 pages in any direction. [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Fetal Position"][/caption] Since then I’ve done work for Subterranean Press’s Night Visions 12, part of the prestigious line of Night Visions books stretching back to the 1980′s. My work for the Maelstrom imprint of Thunderstorm Books will be seen at the end of 2010. I did three covers and signature sheets for three of their books: Six Days by Kelli Owen, and The Rising: Deliverance and A Gathering of Crows, both by Brian Keene. I’ve worked quite a bit with Cemetery Dance Publications as well,…

New digital work: Sleep of the Dark Ones

When I’m not working on full illustrations for books covers, interior illustrations, or even inks and paintings, I try to sketch. It can be considered practice, or working out ideas, and sometimes it’s even just for fun.  Sketches often come in the form of pencil drawings, the traditional means. Occasionally Read more…

Of sketches and such

I was in a pretty good habit, a couple of years back, of posting the sketches that I do all the time. Posting them is good for me, because I can go back and review the things I’ve done. Posting is good for others, so I’m told by other artists, Read more…

The night is darkest just before the dawn. And I promise you, the dawn is coming.

That quote, for those of you who don’t watch movies, is from the film The Dark Knight. Until now, I just thought it was an interesting statement, but the fact is that I’ve lived like that. Also, until now, there was really no dawn to speak of. But, as these Read more…

Spectrum Art Show Recap Part 2: As an attendee and artist

I talked a little while ago (as in, 3 hours ago) about being an exhibitor at Spectrum, and this time I want to focus on the experience as an attendee. Now, since I was an exhibitor and not a full attendee, there are plenty of things I missed, so keep Read more…

New ink art: The Phantom of the Opera

I’ve dabbled with doing an ink of The Phantom of the Opera in the past. The first idea I had was based on a makeup test by actor Lon Chaney Sr., one where he was smiling. Technically, it was accurate. But it just didn’t grab the idea as I’d hoped Read more…

New ink art: The Creature From The Black Lagoon

A couple of years back, when I was just starting to return to inking, I had decided to ink a Creature From The Black Lagoon. It went okay, but partway through I had decided to let it be something else. So, I abandoned the original idea and came up with Read more…

New Ink Art and Walkthrough: The Colossi of Memnon

For a very long time, since way back when I was a college engineering student, I’ve been fascinated with ancient architecture and stonework. Near the top of that list has always been the Egyptian statues known as the Colossi of Memnon, two massive representations of pharaoh Amenhotep III. When I say Read more…

Travels of my first booth part 1: The mess of things

So, I went ahead and did it. I signed up for my first ever booth at a major art convention, in this case the Spectrum Fantastic Art Live show in Kansas City in May, 2012. What the hell was I thinking? Now, before we get any further, let me just Read more…

New Ink Art: Yig, Father of Serpents

In getting ready for my Spectrum booth this coming May (check out the event here), I’ve been working out which pieces of art to bring with me. One of the ideas that came up, which I’ve had before, is to combine three of my smaller inks into one framed set. Read more…

New Acrylic Painting: Hadrosaur-ish

I’ve been working on a number of projects, and one of those is to expand the offerings that I’ll have at my Spectrum Live booth this coming May. To that end, I’m trying to create a number of small acrylic paintings to have there. I’ve also wanted, for some time, Read more…

Spectrum coming up

Most years, when I can spare a little extra money, I try to enter a couple of competitions. First on the list is always the annual Spectrum competition, for the best of the current year’s fantasy/genre art. I was lucky enough to have been chosen for Spectrum 9 many years Read more…
