    • About MeIllustration work I’ve been an artist since the late 90′s, and a published illustrator since 1999, when a couple of magazines featured my work at the same time. Since then, I’ve completed many works for various publishers, from small micro-press publishers up through larger publishers like Subterranean and Cemetery Dance. I’m lucky enough to have had a piece chosen for the prestigious Spectrum annual, a yearly competition and book for the best in contemporary genre artwork. The artwork was originally for Wicked Hollow #1, a small press magazine, and is titled “Fetal Position”. It appeared in Spectrum 9, and somehow was the only grayscale piece for 20 pages in any direction. [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Fetal Position"][/caption] Since then I’ve done work for Subterranean Press’s Night Visions 12, part of the prestigious line of Night Visions books stretching back to the 1980′s. My work for the Maelstrom imprint of Thunderstorm Books will be seen at the end of 2010. I did three covers and signature sheets for three of their books: Six Days by Kelli Owen, and The Rising: Deliverance and A Gathering of Crows, both by Brian Keene. I’ve worked quite a bit with Cemetery Dance Publications as well,…

Russell Dickerson

Russell Dickerson has been a lot of things over many years. Author, artist, designer, winner of awards and recognition, pursuer of the truth, leader of the earth after armageddon.

Russ’s Art Blog: Resistance, or The Black Idol

This is Frantisek Kupka’s Resistance, or The Black Idol, which despite it’s fairly simplistic idea is still a striking piece.

Russ’s Art Blog: And the sea gave up the dead

This is Lord Frederick Leighton’s “And the sea gave up the dead which were in it”, a piece that caught my eye when I was looking for something else (which is often the case).

Post-Apocalyptic Survival Bunny

In trying out new ideas, the topic a few weeks ago was “Post-Apocalyptic Survival Bunny”, which I thought sounded like a lot of fun.

Sketchy McSketch-Sketch

I’ve been trying to sketch quite a bit more lately, I agree with the mantra “Draw! Draw! Draw!”.  It’s been difficult in the past to make time for sketching, especially when I have other (paying) projects going on. I think it’s an important step to learning though, and I want Read more…

New wallpapers of my work

Just in case anyone out there wants them (I’ve had a question here and there on it), I saved a number of my art pieces as computer downloads.

Russ’ art blog: Ivan Shishkin’s Rain in the Oak Grove

I was actually doing some searching for a few pieces by Vasily Vereshchagin, and I decided to look around a bit at some of the other Russian artists.

Russ’ first new art blog of 2009: The Captive

It’s been awhile since I’ve written an art blog, which I’ve done off and on for a few years. I usually discuss a piece of art, almost always one that I like myself, and give the world my thoughts on it.

Photos from the trip

This is sort of an entry about the trip I just went on to Texas, and sort of showing off a bit of photography, so bear with me.

More macro shots

Since the graphic design/logo blog went over like a lead balloon, and I wanted to try the new camera out some more, here are a few closeups of an old sculpture that I did years ago. Maybe it will help me get cracking on that next sculpture too…

Graphic design: my red-headed step child

Most people that know me outside of family (both of you, you know who you are) know me as an artist.  But by day, and sometimes even at night, I am also a graphic designer. Sometimes that means signs, or books, or even logos, which is the topic for today.  Read more…

Geeking out on the new Canon

It’s just a point-and-shoot Canon 880, but it’s a far more advanced camera than my 4 1/2 year old Kodak.  It takes some pretty decent shots, and I think it’ll be a good camera overall.  A few shots… This one shows off the macro ability, which the Kodak never had Read more…
