    • About MeIllustration work I’ve been an artist since the late 90′s, and a published illustrator since 1999, when a couple of magazines featured my work at the same time. Since then, I’ve completed many works for various publishers, from small micro-press publishers up through larger publishers like Subterranean and Cemetery Dance. I’m lucky enough to have had a piece chosen for the prestigious Spectrum annual, a yearly competition and book for the best in contemporary genre artwork. The artwork was originally for Wicked Hollow #1, a small press magazine, and is titled “Fetal Position”. It appeared in Spectrum 9, and somehow was the only grayscale piece for 20 pages in any direction. [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Fetal Position"][/caption] Since then I’ve done work for Subterranean Press’s Night Visions 12, part of the prestigious line of Night Visions books stretching back to the 1980′s. My work for the Maelstrom imprint of Thunderstorm Books will be seen at the end of 2010. I did three covers and signature sheets for three of their books: Six Days by Kelli Owen, and The Rising: Deliverance and A Gathering of Crows, both by Brian Keene. I’ve worked quite a bit with Cemetery Dance Publications as well,…

Russ’ Art Blog: The Plague of Rome

I’m all about cheery pics tonight, the other two I was thinking of were pretty dark too.  Something in the air maybe? This is Jules Elie Delaunay’s Plague in Rome (1869, Oil on canvas, 52″ x 69″), also known as The Angel of Death. I might be wrong, but this Read more…

Great news! I’m a guest at VisionCon

Fantastic news, for the first time ever I will be an official guest at a con! I am one of the guests at VisionCon in January, in Springfield, Missouri (website at www.visioncon.net). Along with Brian Keene, Mike Oliveri, Cullen Bunn and a bunch of other folks. I went last year, Read more…

The whole last week: KillerCon, accidents, and art

It’s definitely been an interesting couple of weeks, and to start things off here’s how last week (Sunday evening) started: Out in Colorado here we call that, “turning on a green arrow”. Basically, we get the green turn arrow (everyone else gets red), we start turning and BLAMMO!, other party Read more…

Some new art

This one is a cross between a painted style and the textured/layered style that I attempt when I can.

Russ’ Art Blog: Death on a Pale Horse

Though J.M.W. Turner’s technique is certainly evident here, the tone of the piece isn’t one I expected.

Sketchy McSketch Sketch: August Edition

Every so often, I try to go back and look at my sketches and pick the ones that don’t seem so horrifyingly bad that I can’t show everyone else.

Conventions: Where I’ll be

It turns out that, despite having a new house, I do have the money to hit a couple of upcoming cons.

Music and the artist Part 1: Soundtracks

An interesting discussion came up today (both online and in real life) about what music drives our particular passions.   I decided to go through my iTunes library and really see which tracks influence my art, or at least which tracks really drive me in certain directions with the type and Read more…

Having done the artwork for the book, I decided to do a promotional “layer-by-layer” video for YouTube.

Making prints of my art

I still get the occasional question from folks who want to buy a print of my work. So, I thought I’d ask if any of the below pieces would be good print choices.

A YouTube promo for my art

I’m working on a Flash book trailer for a  client (you’ll see soon enough, it’s not a small client), and for testing with converting Flash animation to video I decided to create a promo for my own art. After a number of unique issues (I’m looking at you, Kaspersky), I Read more…

Russ’s Art Blog: “Pushkin’s Farewell to the Sea”

Ok, so it’s been a little while since the last one of these art blogs. I’ll see if I can’t post a few more of them, and without the 4 months between them. Above is Ivan Aivazovsky and Ilya Repin’s Pushkin’s Farewell to the Sea (1887, Oil on canvas), Read more…

Photos from New Mexico

I’m still getting settled into our new house, but I thought I’d best post something (just so no one thinks I died or anything). These photos were taken on our trip to New Mexico in May, and I thought they turned out pretty well.  These in particular are from Santa Read more…

Russ’s Art Blog: Bierstadt, and seeing it in person

I’ve seen many Bierstadt works in art books (and a handful in person), and I think he had a real knack for capturing the feel of the wild.

Color sketching and fun with Photoshop

I’ve been picking away at a color sketch in Photoshop, and I think it’s finally done.  I try to do pencil sketching, ink and crosshatching practice and Photoshop/digital sketching and manipulation each week just to get new ideas rolling around in my head.  Sometimes they work, other times not so Read more…
