    • About MeIllustration work I’ve been an artist since the late 90′s, and a published illustrator since 1999, when a couple of magazines featured my work at the same time. Since then, I’ve completed many works for various publishers, from small micro-press publishers up through larger publishers like Subterranean and Cemetery Dance. I’m lucky enough to have had a piece chosen for the prestigious Spectrum annual, a yearly competition and book for the best in contemporary genre artwork. The artwork was originally for Wicked Hollow #1, a small press magazine, and is titled “Fetal Position”. It appeared in Spectrum 9, and somehow was the only grayscale piece for 20 pages in any direction. [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Fetal Position"][/caption] Since then I’ve done work for Subterranean Press’s Night Visions 12, part of the prestigious line of Night Visions books stretching back to the 1980′s. My work for the Maelstrom imprint of Thunderstorm Books will be seen at the end of 2010. I did three covers and signature sheets for three of their books: Six Days by Kelli Owen, and The Rising: Deliverance and A Gathering of Crows, both by Brian Keene. I’ve worked quite a bit with Cemetery Dance Publications as well,…

My thoughts on the coming year

But I think this new year brings a different feeling, one I haven’t felt in a long time: hope.

VisionCon and the things I’m bringing

I’ll probably at least bring business cards and mini-cards, but talking online today with Cullen Bunn I also considered “monster cards’.

Russ’ Art Blog: The Young Lady with the Shiner

One of the nice things about being in an art museum is the chance to take in a surprise painting, one that you didn’t expect to see.

Sketchy McSketch Sketch: November and Moleskines

For those not in the parlance, a Moleskine is a particular kind of small journal, in my case the “storyboard” version.

Hey imagine that: New art by me!

I’ve been trying to get back into art as strongly as I can, especially with my being a guest at VisionCon in January.  It’s been tough, between family life, day job, being out of town for said job, and so on.  But I managed to squeeze in some time this Read more…

Russ’ Art Blog: The Wadsworth Atheneum

I don’t often get to art museums, so I make the most of it when a chance comes up (save for the Denver Art Museum, which is only an hour away). I think, though books and the web can certainly show you art you’ve never seen before, that being in Read more…

Russ’ Art Blog: Found Drowned

Continuing on my art posts of really happy, joyous images (reference: sarcasm), here is Vasily Perov’s Found Drowned (1867, Oil on canvas, 27″ x 42″). I’ve had a bookmark for it for awhile, and I think it’s an interesting piece. I think it’s one of those pieces that has a Read more…
