I missed the opening couple of rounds of Alphabeasts this time, so I’m gradually catching up with “A” and “B”. Today, I managed to get “B” out of the way, with an ink I’ve wanted to do for some time.

One of the films that has always inspired me (from a twisted direction at least) is the 80’s remake of The Fly, directed by David Cronenberg and starring Jeff Goldblum as the unfortunate scientist. I liked the film quite a lot, especially as it’s still the very definition of “body horror”.

If you haven’t seen it, well, go do it. I’ll wait.

All done? Good, then let’s talk (if you didn’t really see it, then of course there may be spoilers below).

Goldblum’s scientist character, Brundle, has of course messed up with his teleportation. Unlike the original version, it’s not just swapping heads with a fly, they’ve been combined at a genetic level. For the last half of the film, Brundle slowly degenerates into a final creature that’s part fly and part scientist. Or, “Brundlefly”.

Here’s my rendition of Brundlefly below, complete with a tiny fly on his finger. If you haven’t seen the other entries, click on “Alphabeasts” at the top of this page. Don’t miss all the other entries by some great artists either, go to http://alphabeasts.tumblr.com/.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you my new ink art, B is for Brundlefly (click on the image for a larger version):
